Kilim Runners

Alaturca Collections is proud to offer for your consideration a fine range of unique hand made, 100% natural fibre Kilim area rugs and runners.

Our range covers kilims of a variety of sizes, designs and ages and each is individually selected and sourced directly from the people who make them, Turkish villagers and tribal people, and who continue the tradition of oriental kilim construction which has been passed down through each community and family for centuries and for whom the sale of these items often provides very important additional family income.  We have a unique range of nomadic kilims, from new productions to aged, vintage and antique pieces, and which are made from 100% natural products, wool, cotton and silk, with, where possible, vegetable dyes. Our mission is to ensure that the kilims we offer are of the highest standard of workmanship, design and colour and are in line with contemporary home decoration trends.

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pile-less textile of many uses produced by one of several flat-weaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practised in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China. As well as being utilised as area rugs and floor coverings, kilim weavings have been historically used to make many other items for every-day nomadic use such as wall hangings, curtains, cushions, saddle bags, salt bags, infant cradles, storage receptacles, carrier bags, animal coverings, tent walls and much more.

The major difference between a kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug is that a knotted carpet is made by tying individual short strands of different colour wool, cotton and / or silk the warps and securing these knots by pressing / beating the wefts tightly downwards before the next row of knots is tied. Kilim designs are made by interweaving variously coloured wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flat-weave.

There are several important and distinctive styles of flat-weave - plain weave, slit weave, soumak, cicim, zili and senneh are but a few of the weaving methods used to produce these beautiful pieces of skilful handicraft. Our collection includes beautiful examples of these various weaving techniques.

We are continually adding to our collection and would invite you not only to peruse the pieces on our website, but also visit us to inspect our range first-hand. You may notice that some pieces are marked "Sold".
